When my son came into the world, I quickly noticed something: there weren't enough children's books out there celebrating black boys or featuring them as the main characters. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and crafted my own stories. Bedtime became our favorite time for my son and I when I conjured up the tales.
In 2019, with the help of my talented brother Earl, who did the illustrations, my tales started hitting the shelves, starting with the debut of "The Left-Handed Champ," a super-powered children's story.
But it didn't stop there. My imagination led me to co-create book character toys that make storytelling time even more special.
My mission? It's simple yet powerful: I want to combine reading and playing, we can turn recent statistics around. In recent UK stats, 3 in 5 children don't read for pleasure. A concerning trend, but I truly believe that getting kids engaged in playful storytelling can work wonders for their reading skills and overall enjoyment.
I'm Earl Wilson the co-founder and the other half of the sibling creators, hailing from South London, an artist and the Illustrator of the well received children's books including 'The Left-handed Champ' and 'I am Violet'.
I enjoyed drawing ever since I was a youngster watching my mother draw clothes designs and patterns as a seamstress. Although, I did not realise at the time that my mother's drawing were of match stick men. I was amazed. The million pound question. How do I imagine characters? I describe tapping into my imagination with the help of experiences, inspirations from other artists and adding my own spin. My career includes exciting art commissions here and in Spain, a successful solo exhibition called Happy Dance at Noelia's gallery in 2019, and being a guest judge working with the Illustrated World Championships 2021.
I am the SamsungKX's residential artist and I have shared my passion for art by delivering many popular art classes to guests at the #SamsungKX experience space. As I reflect on my career to date I can say it's gratifying to see my art developed into books and toys enjoyed by children.
