When my son came into the world, I quickly noticed something: there weren't enough children's books out there celebrating black boys or featuring them as the main characters. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and crafted my own stories. I remember how bedtime became our favourite time when I conjured up the tales with my boy being the protagonist.
In 2019, I worked on the stories with my talented illustrator brother Earl. My debut children's story "The Left-Handed Champ," a super-powered tale begun hitting shelves, and was available online to purchase, and still is. To date we have various stories that help children feel a sense belonging and seen.
But my imagination just keeps on going. Ideas have led me to co-create book character toys that make storytelling even more special.
My mission? It's simple yet powerful: I want to combine reading and playing, to improve the disconnection between children and reading. In recent UK stats, 3 in 5 children don't read for pleasure - impacting their literacy skill. A concerning trend, I truly believe that getting kids engaged in playful storytelling can work wonders, and make reading enjoyable.
I'm Earl Wilson the co-founder and the other half of the sibling creators, hailing from South London, an artist and the Illustrator of the well received children's books including 'The Left-handed Champ' and 'I am Violet'.
I've enjoyed drawing ever since I was a youngster watching my mother draw clothes designs and patterns as a seamstress. I was amazed. Years later I realised that my mother's cool drawings that sparked my passion were just matchstick men. I often tap into my imagination with the help of experiences, and inspirations to illustrate books. My career includes recent exciting art commissions in the UK and in Spain, a successful solo exhibition called Happy Dance at Noelia's gallery in 2019, and being a guest judge for televised Illustrated World Championships 2021.
I am the SamsungKX's residential artist and I have shared my passion for art by delivering many popular art classes to guests at the #SamsungKX experience space. As I reflect on my career to date I can say it's gratifying to see my art developed into books and toys enjoyed by children.
